Woman arraigned for stealing N420,000

A 24-year-old saleswoman, Anabel Akuneziri, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly converting N420,000 belonging to her employer to her own personal use.

Akuneziri is charged with stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Kokoye Olusegun, said that the accused committed the offence at Abia Plaza BBA Market, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos on Sept. 14.

He said that the accused stole N420,000 belonging to one Oraemedo Sunday.

Olusegun said that Akuneziri was supposed to deposit the money at Diamond Bank on behalf of her boss, but instead converted the money to her own personal use.

“When Sunday did not get any alert from his bank, he became worried and decided to confront his employee, who claimed she paid the money into his account.

“Sunday went to the bank to inquire about his money, only to discover that the accused did not pay any money into his account.

“The complainant said that by the time he got back to his shop, the accused had absconded.

“Sunday said he tried to get through to the accused on phone, but all efforts proved abortive.

“The accused was later traced to her apartment and arrested by the police,” Olusegun said.

He said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, who resides at Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till Nov.1 for mention.

Fire at the University of Jos Library University of Jos is to convene an emergency senate meeting on Monday to review the level of damage done to the institution by the Saturday night inferno. NDLEA arrests 252 suspects, seizes 3,073 kg Indian hemp

NDLEA operatives The NDLEA in Niger on Monday said that it had arrested 252 suspects and seized 3,073.9 kilogramme of Indian hemp(cannabis sativa) in the state. The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Joseph Iweajunwa, who disclosed this in Minna, said that the operations were carried out between January and September. “Our operations in Niger State from January to September 2016 led to the arrest of 252 suspects and seizure of 3,073.997 kilogramme of cannabis sativa,’’ he said. Iweajunwa said that within the period, the agency also seized 1, 530 litres of liquid drugs, especially cough syrup with codeine. He said the NDLEA also counselled and rehabilitated 90 drug addicts in the state within the period under review.
