Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba has granted state pardon to 21 prisoners serving various jail terms in Gembu, Jalingo, Serti and Wukari prisons.
A statement signed by Ishaku’s Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Hassan Mijinyawa, made this known in Jalingo on Thursday.
Ishaku said the pardon was based on the recommendation of the state Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and in line with Sec. 212 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Those pardoned were; Yankari Isaac, Philibus Maisamari, Lawan Saidu, Aisha Abdullahi, Alani Usman, Isah Mohammed, Mohammed Babamuri, Bala Usman, among others.
He urged the Controller of Prisons in the state to as a matter urgency discharge and acquit the affected prisoners.
Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistance to Ishaku on Public Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Bello, has called on the freed prisoners to see their freedom as a call to a changed life.
Bello told journalists in Jalingo that the pardoned prisoners had shown sufficient remorse to be released from captivity.
“It is our hope that the freed prisoners will turn a new leaf in their lives and stay out of trouble.
