Police nab 2 armed robbery suspects in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command on Monday said that it arrested two armed robbery suspects that have tormented residents of Achara Layout within Enugu metropolis.

The command’s spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed in Enugu that the suspects had been disturbing the layout for over two months.

Amaraizu noted that the suspects were nabbed through police operative response to a distress call.

“The criminals and their cohorts now at large were operating at a shop on gunpoint at Awkunanaw Street in Achara Layout on Thursday at about 4p.m. where suspects have allegedly robbed a salesgirl of an undisclosed amount of money and valuables.

“It was gathered that on arrival, suspects allegedly engaged police in a gun duel and the ensuing gun battle resulted in the arrest of Obumneme Nwafor, who already had been touched by bullet.

“His arrest, however, promptly guided police operatives in the arrest of Emeka Oparaugo alias cross-over.

“Recovered from the suspects are locally made pistols with double mouth, two cell-phones,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that the suspects were helping the police in its investigation.

“A manhunt on the fleeing members of the gang have been intensified with a view to arresting them,’’ he said.

In another development, the command have begun an investigation into fire outbreak at Ogige Main Market, Nsukka on Friday with a view to finding out the possible cause of the incident.

The command’s spokesman noted that the fire outbreak, which happened at about 2.30 a.m., destroyed one storey building that contains different flats with stores.

Property worth millions of Naira was lost to the fire.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement.
