In view of the ongoing 2016 Jos Trade Fair, the Plateau Government says the monthly sanitation exercise will not hold in the state on Saturday.

Mr Abdullahi Abbas, the State Commissioner of Environment and Solid Minerals Development, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jos that there would also not be a restriction on human and vehicular movements.

Abbas, however, urged the residents of the state to maintain good personal hygiene and clean environment at all times.

He said that this would prevent the thriving of vectors and rodents that transmit diseases to humans in dirty and unkempt environment.

“Rodents like rats that transmit Lassa fever to humans, thrive in dirty environments while vectors like mosquitoes cause malaria.

“The vector, which is also responsible for transmission of cholera, thrives in a dirty and bushy environment.

“So, it is important that we all strive to maintain good community and personal hygiene.

“Personal hygiene is the most effective way of tackling diseases,’’ the commissioner said.

The commissioner also cautioned people against bush burning with the onset of the dry season and the harmattan winds, to avoid the loss of lives and property that occur in the past.

“The Harmattan is here and because most grasses and scrubs are now dry, people might be tempted to set them on fire and with the winds; such fires can spread beyond control.

“Bush burning is also detrimental to the ozone layer because it contributes to the emission of green gases which deplete the ozone layer,” Abbas said.

The Houthis’ Justification In their statement, the Houthis framed the attack as retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which they characterized as indiscriminate bombings resultin...

Fall of Assad is a Blow to Russia's Prestige

The potential fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a long-standing ally of Russia, would mark a turning point in Moscow’s global influence, particularly in the Middle East. Steve Rosenberg’s analysis underscores the profound implications for Russia, which has invested heavily—both militarily and politically—in ensuring Assad’s survival over the past decade. This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
