Don’t violate human rights, AIG tells policemen

The Assistant Inspector–General of Police in charge of Zone 8, Mr Tijani Baba, on Wednesday warned policemen to avoid violating human rights of citizens while carrying out official duties.

Baba gave the warning in Lokoja while declaring open a three-day training programme for policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

He said that any policeman found guilty of human rights abuse would have himself to blame, warning that Nigerians should be treated with respect and honour.

Baba said the retraining programme became necessary as a result of rising wave of violent crimes and commended the Inspector- General of Police for rising up to the challenge.

He urged the participants to take the programme seriously, noting that they would also train others.

The Assistant Inspector-General said that the Nigeria Police Force was ready to partner with the civil society to bring about a new order in the force.

Participants at the training were drawn from Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states.

The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdulahi Chafe, was present at the event while his counterparts from Ekiti and Kwara states sent representatives.
