Council boss organises Independence Day games for pupils

As part of the activities to mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day anniversary, the sole administrator of the Ikoyi–Obalende local council development area, Mr. Felix Goke Olawale on Saturday organised a novel games festival for pupils of the 11 primary schools in the area.

The event took place at the St. Gregory’s College open field Obalende Ikoyi Lagos.

Residents of Obalende, parents and guardians of the pupils, political leaders graced the occasion.

Some of the dignitaries in attendance include Mr. Kaffo Rotimi, Sir Obilanu, Mrs. T.A Danso, Mrs. Arinola Oluwo, Mrs. Folake Ajaiye and Engr. Obafemi Oluwa

Others include Mrs. Ayodele Oluwakemi, Mrs. Fobun Folasade, Mrs. Oladaiye Iyabo and others.

The event was anchored by the information officer of Ikoyi Obalende LCDA, Mrs. Amope Jimoh.

The 11 primary schools that participated in the game festival include St. George Primary School, Girls Modern Academy Primary School, Jinadu Anglican Primary School, St. George Boys Primary School, Obalende Primary School and Ikoyi Primary School.

Others include Ireti Girls Primary School, Hope Primary School, Dodan Barracks Primary School and Ireti Primary School.

At the end of the games, Dodan Barracks Primary School won the football match and went home with a trophy.

Speaking at the event, the Sole Administrator of Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA, Mr. Felix Goke Olawale, explained that he decided to add sporting activity to this year’s Independence Day anniversary to prepare our children for future sporting activities as they are the leaders of tomorrow.

On his achievements since he assumed duty three months ago, Olawale said: ”On assumption of office three months ago, I discovered that about 101 shops had been locked up on Obalende Road, Ikoyi, Lagos for environmental offences. I did my best to reopen all the shops for the residents with a warning that they must henceforth obey environmental laws of Lagos State.

”I also gave about 50 elderly people cash to feed themselves to enable them live long and I paid for the treatment of a soldier stabbed by a youth of Obalende. And in two weeks time, I am going to lay the foundation of a primary health centre at Dolphin Estate highrise, Ikoyi Lagos to bring health delivery nearer to the people in the area. I promise to move Ikoyi – Obalende to a greater height during my tenure.”

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement. Ruling on a bail application filed by the accused, Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
