Six principal officers of the University of Jos (UniJos),are to contribute N1million each for the restocking of the institution’s burnt library complex.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sebastian Maimako, who announced the contribution on Thursday in Abuja, tagged “Beauty from Ashes,” said that the effort is to “bring back the library to life.’’
Principal officers in a university are the vice-chancellor, registrar, bursar, librarian, among others.
It would be recalled that the library complex which housed two faculties with six departments was razed on Oct. 8, 2016.
Maimako said that an integrity test has been conducted on the structure by relevant bodies and it has been certified fit for usage.
He stated that there was urgent need to renovate the burnt library and restock it for the benefit of the university community.
“The six principal officers of the university have agreed to voluntarily contribute N1million each.
“This is our desire to lead by example and we urge deans, directors, staff of the university and students to contribute for the `Beauty from Ashes’ project”.
He said that contributions were not limited to money alone as stakeholders are free to contribute books, journals and other materials.
Dr Stephen Akintunde, UniJos Librarian said that since the incident, library services continued in other campuses of the university.
The librarian advised students to visit other campuses to access the electronic library of the institution.
Some deans and directors promised to make donations in due course.
Mr Yakubu Gomos, Director, Advancement Office, whose responsibility is to link the school with its alumni, promised to contact the alumni members for assistance.
