A motion to invite President Buhari to address the National Assembly was passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives on Thursday.
The president is expected to use the opportunity to brief the legislators on the economic crisis facing the nation and ways of getting out of it.
The country officially entered recession towards the end of August and since then the country has witnessed a rise in inflation.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has blamed the recession largely on the disruption of oil sales by Niger Delta militants who have destroyed many oil pipelines since the beginning of the year.
