Weather authorities said on Tuesday that Typhoon Malou was approaching Islands in Japan’s South and that it had already brought strong winds and heavy downpours to parts of the region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of high waves and flooding as the season’s 13th typhoon moved toward Okinawa and Amami Oshima Islands.
The typhoon was expected to produce waves of up to six metres around the region.
“Rainfall of 48.5 millimetres per hour was recorded on Miyako Island on Tuesday morning, while up to 200 millimetres was predicted for the Okinawa and Amami region by Wednesday noon.
“As of today, the typhoon was 210km west of Naha, travelling North-east at 15 km per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 64.8 km per hour and gusts of 90 km per hour.
“Meanwhile, a low-pressure system dumped heavy rain on the Northern Island of Hokkaido and North-Eastern Japan where a powerful typhoon triggered mudslides and flooding last week, leaving 18 dead and nine missing.
“Rishiri Island has received rainfall of 150 millimetres since Monday night, the area’s largest rainfall in 50 years,” the agency said.
