The Jigawa chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, called on the state government to dissolve the caretaker committees it appointed for Local Government Councils in the state.
The PDP, in a statement issued in Dutse by its Publicity Secretary, Malam Musa Abdullahi, described the caretaker committees as “illegal”.
The party said that the government must also conduct elections into the 27 Local Government Councils in the state.
“The PDP wishes to announce its position on the illegal management of the 27 local governments of Jigawa state by caretaker committees with expired tenures.”
The party said it had since gone to court to challenge the decision of the state government not to conduct elections into the councils as provided by the Constitution.
It said that the suit was also “challenging the legality of forming an ad hoc arrangement called “Caretaker Committees” to run the affairs of local governments in the state.”
The statement noted that the six months tenure of the caretaker committees as approved by the state Assembly had since expired.
“The said illegal mandate has already expired, which translates into illegal administration of Jigawa local governments even by the standards established by the Jigawa House of Assembly.
“The Jigawa state PDP will not accept further extension of tenure of the LG caretaker councils by either unilateral executive decision or the usual adhoc law of the state House of Assembly.”
It said that such action was in breach of the Constitution and an impeachable offence.
The PDP, therefore, advised the Assembly to call the state governor to order and direct him to stop operating institutions without legal backing.
The party said it would go back to court to force the government conduct local councils election in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state Assembly approved names of caretaker committee chairmen for the 27 local councils on Feb. 23.
