The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nasarawa State on Monday said it received 405 cases from January till date.

Alhaji Lawan Bashir-Kano, the state NSCDC Commandant, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia that the reports led to the arrest of some criminal elements in the state.

He said that the reports aided the efforts of its operatives in combating crime in the state.

“Our mandate is to ensure the peaceful coexistence among the people of the diverse ethnic, religious and political groups is been sustained so as to achieve speedy development in the country.

“That is why the command is up and doing in tackling crime of various kinds in the state, so that every citizen whether in the rural or urban area can go about their normal activities without fear of intimidation or attacks.

“I want to disclose to you that from January 2016 to date, the command has received a total number of 405 cases which includes both criminal cases such as vandalism, rape, theft among others and civil cases.

“Out of these 405 cases, we referred 198 for investigation and the rest are not for investigation rather than for mediation between the complainants and the respondent so as to bring peace among themselves,” he said.

He said the command received 41 cases in January and February, 32 cases in March, 54 in April, 49 in May, 58 in June, 61 in July, 70 in August and 40 in September.

Bashir-Kano said that the command synergised with the police and other sister security agencies to ensure a crime-free society.

The commandant said that the NSCDC transferred 71 cases to police for prosecution, and appealed to the public to always give vital information to the command to curtail criminal activities in the state.

He appreciated the people and the media for their continued support to the corps and called for its sustenance.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
