FRSC convicts 25 motorists in Jos

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Plateau Command, has convicted 25 motorists in Jos over various road traffic offences.

The Corps Public Education Officer in the state, Mr Andrew Bala, disclosed this on Saturday in Jos.

Bala said that the offenders were apprehended via a Mobile Court exercise carried out by its officers and men on patrol.

He said the exercise took place on some highways within Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

According to him, mobile court has become one veritable tool that the corps uses to curtail the many anomalies on highways, especially as the “Ember” months are here.

“Our men on patrol actually apprehended 32 motorists, but seven were discharged and acquitted while 25 were found guilty and convicted.

“We mostly use the mobile courts these days because we feel there is the need to give motorists fair hearing, and for me it is a better deal.

“The most prevalent offences these motorists were convicted include overloading, use of worn-out tyres, vehicle license violation and driver’s license violation.

“Others include, use of phone while driving, seatbelt violation and lack of caution signs,” he explained.

Bala further explained that none of the convicted motorists were imprisoned.

The Public Education Officer added that another reason for the mobile court exercise was to rid highways of under-age drivers.

He assured that officers and men of the command would make the mobile court a routine measure to checkmate the excesses of drivers on highways.

He advised vehicle owners to fix new valid tyres on their vehicles to avoid loss of lives and property on highways.

“Statistics shows that most drivers use expired tyres on their vehicles, and that can be very dangerous because such tyres can easily burst and cause accident,” he said.

Fire: UniJos Senate convenes emergency meeting on Monday

Fire at the University of Jos Library University of Jos is to convene an emergency senate meeting on Monday to review the level of damage done to the institution by the Saturday night inferno. NDLEA arrests 252 suspects, seizes 3,073 kg Indian hemp

NDLEA operatives The NDLEA in Niger on Monday said that it had arrested 252 suspects and seized 3,073.9 kilogramme of Indian hemp(cannabis sativa) in the state. The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Joseph Iweajunwa, who disclosed this in Minna, said that the operations were carried out between January and September. “Our operations in Niger State from January to September 2016 led to the arrest of 252 suspects and seizure of 3,073.997 kilogramme of cannabis sativa,’’ he said. Iweajunwa said that within the period, the agency also seized 1, 530 litres of liquid drugs, especially cough syrup with codeine. He said the NDLEA also counselled and rehabilitated 90 drug addicts in the state within the period under review.
