A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr. Kola Shittu, has recommended concessioning of roads as a panacea to the deplorable state of roads in Nigeria.

Shittu made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara.

The former Commissioner for Works said that the best way to achieve road infrastructure in the country remained through Public-Private Partnership arrangement.

He asserted that government alone could not tackle road decay without the active involvement of the private sector.

Under this arrangement, Shittu explained that the company handling the project would deliver and as well as take charge of the maintenance.

“There is no doubt that one of the best way to achieve our road infrastructure is by concession; private-public partnership.

“When you do concession for our roads, it will be delivered and maintained by the company that is handling it,” he said.

Shittu, a former federal lawmaker, also advocated a review of specification presently used for road construction in the country.

“The specification of our roads these days must have to be revisited; this is entirely the assignment of the Federal Ministry for Works.

“For instance, a road from Ilorin-Omu Aran-Egbe-Lokoja is bad now. Even when it is rehabilitated with the present specification, I doubt whether that three years will pass without going bad.

“So, a total redesigning of the specification of our roads is very important, that will lessen the maintenance in the future,” he said.

According to him, the government needs to tackle this issue of road and design a road map to achieve road infrastructure.

Details of the Attack The Houthis, a Shiite militant group with ties to Iran, declared that they launched missile and drone strikes targeting Israel. While the exact impact of these attacks remains unclear, reports suggest that Israel’s defense systems intercepted several threats over its airspace. This marks a significant escalation as the Houthis widen their involvement in the conflict beyond their typical operations within Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia. The Houthis’ Justification In their statement, the Houthis framed the attack as retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which they characterized as indiscriminate bombings resultin...

Fall of Assad is a Blow to Russia's Prestige

The potential fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a long-standing ally of Russia, would mark a turning point in Moscow’s global influence, particularly in the Middle East. Steve Rosenberg’s analysis underscores the profound implications for Russia, which has invested heavily—both militarily and politically—in ensuring Assad’s survival over the past decade. This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
