Economic Crunch: Sokoto withdraws 39 students from UAE

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State

Sokoto State Government has given approval for the transfer back home of its 39 students currently studying in various schools in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal made this known on Friday in Sokoto when he received the report of the committee instituted to advise government on the issue.

According to the governor, the move is expected to save the state government over N500 million.

He said that government’s action signalled a change of priorities in the payment of scholarships to indigent students to study abroad.

“The transfer/relocation of the students was necessitated by the need to conserve funds and apply same to more critical areas in the education sector,” Tambuwal said.

He said that admission had been secured for all the students in Nigerian schools.

Tambuwal added that arrangements had been concluded to ensure that none of the students missed a grade level upon their return home.

“As at the time we sent the children to Dubai to study last year, the state government was spending over N400 million per annum to maintain them there.

”The last administration had good intentions when it sent them to Dubai to further their studies.

”But the current financial situation of the state can no longer allow us to continue with this burden.

“We explained to the parents and guardians of the students that as at today, Sokoto state government spends over N500 million to maintain 17,000 of its citizens on scholarship in various schools in Nigeria,” he said.

Tambuwal said that to pay N400 million for 39 students in Dubai was weighing heavily on the scarce resources of the state.

The governor thanked the students and parents for their understanding.

Earlier in his remarks, Chairman of the Transfer/Relocation Committee of the students, Deputy Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, said government decided to bring them back home due to the high cost of maintaining them in the UAE.

“Government had ensured that admissions were secured for them in local universities.

“All is set for them to resume their academic programmes at home without delay,” Aliyu said.

FG berates US congressman over comment

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture Photo: Femi Ipaye/PM News The Federal Government has described as sadly out of tune with reality the published letter from US Congressman Tom Marino to Secretary of State John Kerry, asking the US to withhold security assistance to Nigeria on the strength of some imaginary infraction by the Buhari Administration. In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Congressman Marino was poorly informed about the issues he commented on, wondering why he did not take the pains to get first hand information from the US Embassy in Nigeria or any other credible source before engaging in what is nothing but a ‘propaganda of his own imagination’. The Minister said by asking the US to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to Nigeria based on a faulty premise, the Congressman has demonstrated a poor understanding of global security issues. ”Insecurity anywhere i

Gabon have also named Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong despite the player being left out of November’s World Cup qualifier in Mali. Ndong was in the capital city Libreville but failed to turn up for international duty ahead of the Mali game last month, forcing the Gabonese Football Federation [Fegafoot] to send him back to England. But a remorseful Ndong, who held clear-the-air talks with Fegafoot has been included in a 23-man Panthers squad. Other names to make the final party include Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, Bruno Ecuélé Manga of Cardiff City and China-based striker Malick Evouna.
