Court fixes Nov. 8, 9, 10, for ex NAMA chief trial

The trial of former Managing Director, Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Ibrahim Abdulsalam, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday suffered a set back following the absence of the trial judge.

Abdulsalam is charged alongside six others over alleged stealing and conversion of N6.8 billion belonging to the agency.

The other accused are: Adegorite Olumuyiwa, Agbolade Segun, Clara Aliche, Joy Adegorite, and two Limited Liability companies, Randville Investment Ltd and Multeng Travels and Tours Ltd.

They are been prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC].

The case which was fixed for continuation of trial, could not proceed on Wednesday, due to the absence of the trial judge, Justice Babs Kuewumi, who is said to be attending a conference.

A new trial date of Nov. 8, Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, was however issued to the parties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the EFCC had on April 7, arraigned the former NAMA boss, three directors of the agency and wife of one of the directors, before the court.

They had all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The charge was subsequently amended to include three more accused persons, and all the accused persons were re-arraigned on April 12.

They again, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and were admitted to bail in the sum of N20 million each, with two sureties each in like sum.

In the charge, the EFCC alleged that on Aug. 19, 2013, the accused conspired to induce NAMA to deliver the sum of N2.8 billion to Delosa Ltd, Air Sea Delivery Ltd and Sea Schedules Systems Ltd.

It was alleged that the delivery was under the pretence that the money represented the cost of clearing NAMA’s consignments.

It was also alleged that between Jan. 2 and Dec. 17, 2013, the defendants allegedly converted N191 million belonging to NAMA to themselves.

They were said to have also converted N728 million between 2013 and 2015, as well as other sums.

The alleged offence is said to have contravened the provisions of section 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, punishable under Section 1 (3) of the Act.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
