The Nigeria Safe School Association (NISSA) has concluded plan to confer an honorary award on the Nigerian Army for its sacrifice in ensuring safety and security in educational institutions.

Mr Dauda Rasheed, Programme Director of the association, made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the award was meant to encourage the military that their efforts in promoting security was recognised and appreciated.

“The award is a symbolic gesture of appreciation from education stakeholders and members of the association.

“The officers and men of the Nigerian Army have been able to liberate schools from terrorists in the North-East Zone of the country due to their gallantry and sacrifice.

“Their efforts in re-opening of schools in the zone and ensuring the security of staff and pupils are highly commendable,’’ he said.

He noted that all the schools in the zone could have been shut down permanently if not for the joint efforts of the military and other security agencies.

Rasheed also commended the Nigerian Army for facilitating other security agencies and organising capacity building conferences for education stakeholders on how to guarantee safe school.

He urged the military to do everything humanly possible to bring the efforts made towards rescuing the Chibok girls to a successful closure.

He urged Nigerians to come together and pray for the safe return of the girls.

He named the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Fire Service as the collaborating agencies, adding that they would also be awarded.

Rasheed said that the awards would be presented to the recipients on Sept. 27, 2016, in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the forthcoming Safe School Summit.

He said that the summit was organised to build capacity and structures for mainstreaming a new anti-cult policy in the country.
