Germany clinches women’s soccer gold with 2-1 win over Sweden

In the women’s soccer gold medal match, Germany defeated Sweden 2-1 on Friday.

Both teams had missed scoring opportunities in the first half.

Sweden had the first chance as Olivia Schough got on the end of the ball in the box, sending her shot over the goal.

Then in the 21st minute, Germany’s Melanie Leupolz won a header in the box, but she could not put her attempt on frame.

The best chance of the first half fell to Germany midway through the opening 45 minutes. Leonie Maier took a shot that was deflected away by Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and the ball fell to Anja Mittag right in front of the goal. Mittag somehow was unable to get her shot on net.

The teams went into halftime scoreless.

The goals started coming early in the second half as Germany took the lead in the 48th minute. Dzsenifer Marozsan got on the ball at the top of the box and sent a curling effort just out of the reach of Lindahl to make it 1-0.

Germany doubled its lead 14 minutes later off a Sweden own goal. Marozsan struck a free kick that deflected off the post and back toward a scrum of players in the box. Swedish defender Lisa Sembrant tried to clear the ball, but she mishit her clearance and sent it into her own goal.

Sweden got one goal back in the 67th minute as substitute Stina Blackstenius slide into the box and knocked the ball into the back of the net.

Following the goal, Sweden continued to press for the equalizer, but could not find a second goal as the match ended 2-1.

With the victory, Germany wins its first Olympic women’s soccer gold medal. Sweden clinches the silver for its first Olympic medal in women’s soccer.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement.
