FG releases N420m to revitalise health centres nationwide

The Federal Government has released N420 million to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to revitalise Primary Health Care centers, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, has said.

He spoke on Monday in Ibadan, shortly after he paid a working visit to the University College Hospital (UCH).

Adewole said that the grant, which was released on July 14, 2016, was seed money from the Federal Government to the states, to assist them to revitalise primary health care centers in their areas.

He expressed the hope that with a revitalized primary health care sector “there will be a reversal of influx of patients into our tertiary health facilities in the states.”

Adewole said the states that perform well would be given more money in the subsequent years as a way of compensating them for a job well done.

He added that a monitoring mechanism had been put in place to ensure that the money was judiciously spent and that the revitalisation efforts were extended to the rural areas as well.

“Each state should ensure that a local government has at least one comprehensive Primary Health Care center.

“This will decongest teaching hospitals and make specialist hospitals to function very well,” he said.

On his working visit, the minister explained that the UCH was capable of handling any medical case with the available manpower and facilities.

He said the hospital was in the best position to reverse medical tourism based on the available manpower and facilities he saw in the hospital.

In a chat with newsmen at the end of the visit, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Prof. Temitope Alonge, described the visit of the minister as “a homecoming.”

He said the minister was on loan to the Federal Government since he was the erstwhile provost of the College of Medicine, and immediate past Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan.

“We are particularly pleased to welcome the minister home; he has pledged support in funding and logistics to ensure that UCH becomes a referral center of medical tourism in Nigeria.

“We are the best and we shall remain at the top in the delivery of quality health care in the country,” Alonge said.

Court grants Fani-Kayode N50m bail

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement.
