After 20 years of sustained resistance, all traders in Alade Market, Ikeja have begun relocating to a newly built alternative market, thereby paving way for its redevelopment.

The traders finally relocated with the intervention of the Lagos State Government, Ikeja Local Government and the Iyaloja of Alade Market, Chief Aina Adenuga.

Chief Adenuga assured that all legal allotees in the old market had started moving into the alternative market.

All parties agreed to the relocation plan after series of meeting at the weekend with the Sole Administrator of Ikeja LGA, Mr. Abiodun Taiwo and representatives of the state government, among others.

The decision of all the parties to relocate from Alade Market ended a 20-year conflict, which undermined the proposal to redevelop the market to a shopping mall to cost N6.9 billion.

The parties agreed that the concessionaire of the Alade Shopping Mall, the Masters Reality Int’l Concepts Limited should erect a billboard indicating that the old market had been relocated to the new one.

Also, the parties set up a relocation committee headed by the immediate past Executive Secretary of Ikeja LGA, Alhaji Adekunle Dally-Adeokun. Other members include the Managing Director of Masters Reality Int’l Concept, Mr. Lai Omotola and the Iyaloja of the market.

The parties agreed that the relocation committee should ensure that all traders “relocate from the old market on or before July 18, the date set aside for the inauguration of the alternative market.”

The parties warned that all illegal occupants under the aegis of Concerned Traders in Alade Market should desist from disrupting the relocation of the old market to the alternative place.

After the meeting at the weekend, the sole administrator noted that out of the 299 allotees in the old market, 260 had collected their allocation papers after paying the allocation fee of N150,000.

The new Alade market which is located about 150 metres away from the old market, off Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja seats on 3 hectares of land. It has 504 lock-up shops, 200 units of open stalls, 20 toilets, 350kva and 150kva generators, 3 boreholes as well as an ample car park that can take up to 350 cars at a time among others.”

The relocation to the alternative market would pave way for the construction of Alade Shopping Market, a project valued at N6.9 billion according to the concession agreement in 2010.

Houthis Claim Attack on Central Israel in Response to Gaza ‘Massacres’

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has taken a concerning regional turn as the Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for an attack on central Israel. The group announced this as part of their escalating response to what they describe as "massacres" in Gaza amid the Israeli military’s operations in the strip. Details of the Attack The Houthis, a Shiite militant group with ties to Iran, declared that they launched missile and drone strikes targeting Israel. While the exact impact of these attacks remains unclear, reports suggest that Israel’s defense systems intercepted several threats over its airspace. This marks a significant escalation as the Houthis widen their involvement in the conflict beyond their typical operations within Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia. The Houthis’ Justification In their statement, the Houthis framed the attack as retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which they characterized as indiscriminate bombings resultin...

Fall of Assad is a Blow to Russia's Prestige

The potential fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a long-standing ally of Russia, would mark a turning point in Moscow’s global influence, particularly in the Middle East. Steve Rosenberg’s analysis underscores the profound implications for Russia, which has invested heavily—both militarily and politically—in ensuring Assad’s survival over the past decade. This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
