Public schools remain shut in Oyo

Schools in Oyo State have remained shut in spite of the state government’s directive to reopen on Monday (today).

A correspondent who went round the Ibadan metropolis reports that both primary and
secondary schools’ gates were not opened after four weeks of closure.

Some students were seen already dressed in their school uniforms in the morning but they could not enter the school premises.

Some of them, who spoke under a condition of anonymity, said they were in schools based on the directive by the State Government that schools should re-open on Monday.

Both teaching and non-teaching staff were absent from the schools
visited as the gates remained shut.

The State Government had announced the re-opening of public schools in the
state with effect from Monday.

This directive was contained in a statement signed by Mr Toye Arulogun, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism.

According to Arulogun, the State Government decided to reopen the schools with
effect from Monday July 11, excluding the 17 schools that participated in the June 6 violent demonstration.

Prominent community leaders, religious leaders as well as traditional rulers and well meaning Nigerians, had implored the State Government to reopen the schools.

It will be recalled that on June 6 some public school pupils went on the rampage to protest government’s proposed public/private participatory management of schools in the state.

The students protested the government decision, following the allegation that their schools had been sold in the process, which government consequently denied.

However, efforts to get the reaction of Mr Waheed Olojede, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State chapter, failed as he could not be contacted.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
