Pele visits Nigeria August 11

Brazil’s football legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as “Pele’’ will be in the country in August for a two-day programme on youth development and empowerment.

The facilitators of the visit, Winihin Jemide Series (WJS) and Youth Experience Days Africa (YEDA), made the disclosure at a news conference on in Lagos.

The football great, is renowned for many achievements, including scoring 1,281 goals in his professional career.

Pele has also been named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and FIFA respectively.

His forthcoming visit will be his second visit to the country, the first in 1967 was occasioned by a two-day cease fire during the Nigerian civil war.

His visit allowed the warring sides to watch Pele and Santos play an exhibition match in Lagos.

Pele would be in the country from Aug. 11 to Aug. 12 for the programme, tagged “WJS/YEDA Legend Edition’’.

The organisers said that programmes line-up for the events were street football tournament that would feature 44 youths selected from the street and sports clinics.

Also, there will be a gala night with Pele and other Africa football legends where Pele memorabili would also be auctioned, the organisers said.

The facilitators said that proceeds from the auction would be donated to an eligible local youth football academy.

The event will involve football loving teenagers and parents, state governments, corporate sector and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The organisers also assured that adequate security and logistics were already in place to ensure a hitch-free programme.

Pele will also visit Ghana on Aug. 14.

Fire: UniJos Senate convenes emergency meeting on Monday

Fire at the University of Jos Library University of Jos is to convene an emergency senate meeting on Monday to review the level of damage done to the institution by the Saturday night inferno. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sebastian Maimako, disclosed this on Sunday after inspecting areas affected by the incident. NDLEA arrests 252 suspects, seizes 3,073 kg Indian hemp

NDLEA operatives The NDLEA in Niger on Monday said that it had arrested 252 suspects and seized 3,073.9 kilogramme of Indian hemp(cannabis sativa) in the state. The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Joseph Iweajunwa, who disclosed this in Minna, said that the operations were carried out between January and September. “Our operations in Niger State from January to September 2016 led to the arrest of 252 suspects and seizure of 3,073.997 kilogramme of cannabis sativa,’’ he said. Iweajunwa said that within the period, the agency also seized 1, 530 litres of liquid drugs, especially cough syrup with codeine. He said the NDLEA also counselled and rehabilitated 90 drug addicts in the state within the period under review.
