Mr. Philip Shuaibu, the running mate to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, has disclosed that his nomination surprised and excited him.
Shuaibu who hailed his nomination as the running mate to Mr. Godwin Obaseki, ascribed his emergence to the work of God.
The federal lawmaker currently represents Etsako Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Benin.
He said: “The office of the deputy governor is not one that you contest for. It is the leaders that take that decision and I was surprised and excited that my name featured in their mind and I was selected to be the running mate. I pray to God that I meet the challenges ahead and not to disappoint those who reposed this confidence in me.
“I am really excited because it was not something I expected, I believe it’s God’s doing. I know I was asked by some persons if I was not interested and I told them that the office of the deputy governor is not something you contest, it is the governor and leaders from my experience that normally look at the options and take a decision and when the decision was in my favour I was excited and pray to God that those quality they saw in me will not die but continue to flourish so that I will not disappoint them.”
Expressing his gratitude to the leadership of the party in the state, Shuaibu however, punctured the claim in some quarters that the deputy governorship position was not supposed to be ceded to Etsako where he hails from since the current senator and governor of the state are from those areas and argued that the leadership of the party were being strategic due to the voting strength of the three Etsako Local Governments.
He further justified why the governorship was rightly ceded to Etsako, saying “the Senate which is in Etsako today is a common denominator for the whole Afemai people and the House of reps is a common denominator among the three Etsako’s. Interestingly, the constituency that I represent consist of three local governments out of the six, so as far as Edo is concerned and the South/South, it is the largest constituency so far.
“People in my constituency are already clamouring that that constituency is too large to be one following the number of votes and 32 wards in that constituency. Election is all about majority and I think we should play down ethnicity and celebrate merit. The party also has its strategy so we should emphasis less on ethnicity. Afemai land is one and we will also remain one.”
