Lagos arrests 85 sanitation offenders

The Lagos State Taskforce on Saturday arrested 85 people for violating the environmental sanitation law of the state.

Taskforce’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Taofiq Adebayo disclosed that those arrested included 68 male and 17 female, saying that they were arrested for loitering around while the cleaning exercise was on.

He said one of those arrested during the environmental sanitation exercise at Ojodu-Berger, Mrs. Florence Chima, 48, had pleaded guilty when she was arraigned before the court and claimed that she never knew the environmental sanitation exercise would caught up with her as she rushed to the market at Ogba to buy provision.

Others were arrested around Ojota, Yaba, Marland, Ikorodu, Mile 2, Ikoyi, Ajah, Orile-Iganmu, Ojodu Berger, Agege and Lagos Island.

The state government had set aside every last Saturday of every month for a general cleaning exercise across the state between the hours of 7.00am to 10.00am.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, according to Adebayo had directed the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi to immediately charge all those arrested to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Courts for prosecutions.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has warned traditional council chiefs and their relations against indiscriminate use of fake vehicle number plates across the State.

According to Adebayo, it had been observed that traditional chiefs and their relations used vehicles with fake special number plates to contravene the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.

“The government enjoined traditional rulers to check the excesses of their council chiefs and their relations within their domains by ensuring that all their vehicles with special traditional number plates were registered, as anyone arrested committing traffic and any other environmental offences with any of these vehicles would be arrested and charge to court accordingly,” he stated.
