EKSU student loses leg to Ekiti crash

Yesterday, Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti State Governor, declared a three-day statewide prayer for the repose of the souls of the six students of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, who died on Monday night in an auto accident.

The accident which occurred around 7.30 pm in front of the main gate of the institution when a Lexus car rammed into a commercial minibus plying the institution.

The governor, who made the declaration during a sympathy visit to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, said that the prayer was also meant to prevent a recurrence of such terrible incidences.

The PUNCH reports that findings according to one of its correspondents who visited the hospital on Tuesday revealed that the right leg of one of the two survivors had been amputated.

An inside hospital source said, “The accident badly affected his right leg and he lost so much blood. His leg was amputated to save his life.”

The Ekiti State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Maiwada Ismaila, confirmed that eight persons were involved in the accident, while five died on the spot.

Ismaila said, “One later died in the hospital. But the two survivors are still in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital receiving treatment.”

Reports have it that five male students and one female student died in the accident.

Five of them were in the car while the bus driver had two persons with him including a female, who survived the accident.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
