Roadside bomb kills at least 18 on bus

At least 18 civilians were killed when a roadside bomb went off in Somalia, close to the capital, blowing up a packed minibus, police said.

The blast on Thursday in Lafole, which is around 20 kms west of Mogadishu, struck as the bus was passing by. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“All the 18 people on board the minibus are dead and burnt. A remotely controlled bomb along the road exploded,” Abidkadir Mohamed, a police officer at the scene, said.

Nur Ahmed, who was driving along the same road, told the Reuters news agency that the minibus was being escorted by a truck carrying government troops. The government car escaped undamaged, he said.

The explosion comes less than a week after an attack on a hotel by the al-Shabab armed group in Mogadishu killed at least 15 people.

The group, which wants to topple the government, frequently attacks security forces and civilians.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound.
