Poor turnout of voters characterised Saturday’s bye-election into the Nasarawa/ Toto Federal Constituency seat in Nasarawa state, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Investigations revealed that accreditation and voting started simultaneously around 8.30am in most of the polling units, with proceedings gong on peacefully.

An Assistant Presiding officer at Angwan Dallatu polling unit of Nasarawa central ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed, disclosed that accreditation and voting took place same time to ensure that nobody was disenfranchised .

However, Mr.Abubakar Ibrahim, an All Progressives Congress (APC) agent at the ward, expressed concern over malfunctioning of the card readers.

“My problem is with the card readers; they are not functioning well the way we had expected; we want transparent and peaceful election,” he said

Mr. Mohammed Umar, a voter, described the exercise as peaceful and commended Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their arrangement towards ensuring peaceful election.

At Angwan Girku 1 polling unit of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Miss Aisha Audu, a voter also expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the exercise.

She however decried low turnout of voters and attributed it to the unfilled promised made by some politicians and hardship currently faced by the people.

Other polling units visited in the area includes Madaki 1, Madaki 2, Angwan Maireke and Angwan Dutse 2 polling units among others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed May 28 for the by-election for the Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency following the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency,Mr. Musa Baba Onwana.

Court grants Fani-Kayode N50m bail

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
