Access Bank Lagos City Marathon: Olamide to surpass maiden edition

Oluwaseun Olamide, who was first among the Nigerian females at the maiden Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in 2016, says she hopes to surpass her record at this year’s event. Olamide made the assertion while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos on her preparation for the 42km race on Feb. 11. “I hope to be among the top three in the international category of the second edition. “This time around, I see myself competing for a spot among the first three in the international category. Everyone is aiming high and I will prove my mettle. “The last edition for me was good and also an eye-opener, I will give it my best and I see myself defeating world-class athletes. “I will participate to prove to the world that there are talented long distance runners in Nigeria,’’ she told NAN noting that she was ready for the challenge. Electricity generation hits 3,959 megawatts

Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Wednesday wheeled out about 3,959 megawatts of generated electricity to the 11 distribution companies as the country’s power supply gradually stabilized. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the power generation data is obtained from daily forecast on the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO) website. The daily power statistics posted by SO, a section of the TCN, shows that power generation gradually improved during the festive season with a peak generation of 3,959 megawatts from the national grid. The website shows that the country’s power generation also recorded its lowest generation of 3,366 megawatts within the same period. According to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI, operational report for Jan. 3, the power sector hits a peak generation of 4,959 megawatts as against 3,321 megawatts recorded on Dec. 2. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State Government and commercial activities have picked up in Enugu, Enugu state after the yuletide break that lasted for about two weeks, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Jigawa Police arrests, charges 148 suspects to court

Henry Fadairo, Jigawa State Commissioner of Police The Jigawa Police Command has charged 148 youths suspected to be hoodlums in Baimaina village to court. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Abdu Jinjiri, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Wednesday. Kaduna Security Council relaxes curfew

Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State The Kaduna State Security Council has relaxed the 24-hour curfew in Jema’a and Zangon Kataf Local Government areas with immediate effect. A statement signed by Samuel Aruwan, Special Assistant to Gov. Nasir El-Rufa’i on Media and Publicity, said the curfew had been relaxed to last from 6 p.m to 6 a.m. It, however, said the 24-hour curfew in Kaura Local Government would remain in force. “The curfew in Jema’a and Zangon Kataf local government areas is now for twelve hours daily, from 6 pm to 6 am. “Medical and health personnel carrying out essential services are exempted from the curfew, which was imposed in December 2016.” The statement attributed the reduction in the curfew hours to “improvements in the security situation” in the two local government areas. Man charged with chasing people with broken bottle

The gavel of justice A 21-year-old man, Yusuf Adepoju, on Wednesday, was arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly chasing people with a broken bottle to stab them. The accused was arraigned before Magistrate A.A Adesanya on a three-count charge of attempt to commit felony, assault and breach of peace. Adepoju, of no fixed address, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N50,000 with two sureties in the like sum. According to the Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on Dec.11 at Oshodi, Lagos.
