Jegede and Ibrahim The Supreme Court has given the Court of Appeal the nod to resume hearing of all appeals relating to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidacy tussle in Ondo state. This followed the withdrawal of 10 motions filed for stay of proceeding by the Ali-modu Sheriff faction which led to a stay of proceeding at the appellate court. The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria who presided over the proceedings, Justice Walter Onoghene, dismissed the motion and awarded a cost of N250,000 against those who filed them. Justice Onoghene ordered the Appeal Court to resume hearing because the case is a pre-election matter. Counsel to the Sheriff-led PDP, Mr Beluolisa Nwofor, who earlier served the lower court the motions asked the Supreme Court to strike out the motion but the Supreme Court instead dismissed it. Brazil Mr Adeniran Arimoro, the Programme Operator for the Educational Programme between Brazil and Nigeria, on Tuesday urged more young Nigerians to first learn the Portuguese language before applying for studies in Brazil. Arimoro made the plea in Lagos. He said that lack of proficiency in Portuguese language was currently depriving many young Nigerians from benefiting from the Brazilian government’s scholarships. Ambode inspecting housing projects in Epe Kazeem Ugbodaga Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday said his administration has so far injected over 1,000 additional housing units into the State and that the schemes are now ready for occupation by interested residents. Ambode, who stated this during an extensive inspection tour of ongoing projects in the Eastern axis of the State, said the official flag off of the allocation of the housing units would commence on 9 December, 2016, while interested residents of the State needed not know anybody before applying. At the Sir Micheal Otedeola Housing Estate in Odoragunshin, Epe, Ambode was briefed by the State’s Commissioner for Housing, Mr Gbolahan Lawal, who said the estate was part of the schemes earmarked for the rent-to-own policy of the State Government. court Two unemployed men who allegedly assaulted mobile policemen and security guards at a bank were on Tuesday in Lagos granted N50,000 bail each by a Magistrates’ Court in Ojo, Lagos. The accused, Yohanna Zira, 22, and Sebastian Clement, 20, who both reside at Apapa, a suburb of Lagos, are facing three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of the peace and assault. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court also asked the accused to produce one surety each as part of the bail conditions. According to Magistrate A. A. Paul, the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The Prosecutor, Insp. The prosecutor, Augustine Urom, told the court that Nana Salihu of Gwagwalada, FCT and Imuhani Idris of Lagos, reported the matter at the Central Police Station on Nov. 10. He said that the 25-year-old defendant identified himself on Facebook as a staff of the Bank of Industry and the Officer-in-Charge of employment in the bank. The prosecutor also said that the defendant collected the sum of N150,000 from Salihu with the assurance of getting her a job in the bank. Urom also said that the defendant invited Imuhani from Lagos to Abuja with the assurance of getting her a job. ASUU Strike Some students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have appealed to the Federal Government to urgently look into grievances of striking lecturers to forestall incessant strikes in universities. The students made the appeal in Nsukka on Tuesday while reacting to the ongoing warning strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The President of the Students Union Government (SUG) in the university, Mr Emmanuel Chukwu pleaded with President Muhammad Buhari to urgently address the grievances of the striking lecturers. Chukwu said that this had become necessary in order to prevent disruption in the academic calendar of universities in the country. He is a resident of Bogije Street, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and is standing trial on two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of his teenage daughter.
