Acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday said it had arrested one of its operatives, Uzodinma Kingsley Agbazue, over alleged N15 million bribe. The Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja. Uwujaren noted that the arrest was in line with EFCC’s determination to flush out corrupt operatives aimed at upholding its integrity. He stated that “in furtherance of its avowed commitment to uphold the integrity of its officers, EFCC has arrested one of its operatives. “Uzodinma Kingsley Agbazue was arrested for offences bordering on criminal conspiracy and extortion.’’ According to Uwujaren, the suspect, who is until his arrest a Deputy Detective Superintendent (DSS), collected N15 million from a lawmaker who is under investigation by the commission. A 26-year old housewife, Aishat Kazeem, has urged an Ojaoba Sharia Court of Arbitration to dissolve her 18-month marriage to her husband, Dikrulai, following constant beating by the latter. Boat carrying migrants capsize One hundred and sixty-two bodies have been found after a boat carrying hundreds of migrants capsized off an Egyptian coastal town this week, a provincial official said on Friday. “18 more bodies were retrieved as at this afternoon, bringing the number of victims to 162. “A total of 164 people have been rescued since the boat sank on Wednesday off Beheira’s town of Rosetta,’’ the governor of the Delta Beheira province, Mohamed Sultan, said. He did not provide a breakdown of the survivors’ nationalities. Naira The Naira on Friday appreciated against the dollar at the interbank market, after sustaining losses for two days. The Nigerian currency gained N5.28 to close at N307.79 from N313.07 posted on Thursday. Trading at the Bureau De Change (BDC) segment of the market showed that the Naira exchanged at N433, N550 and N472 against the dollar, Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively. At the parallel market, the Nigerian currency gained one point to exchange at N435, while it closed at N560 and N475 against the Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively. However, traders at the market are optimistic that the Naira will sustain gains at the market by next week as Travelex commences the sale of forex to BDCs.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said 30 political parties had submitted names of their candidates for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo state. The commission’s Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Nick Dazang, disclosed this in an interview. Dazang said that all the parties met the Thursday deadline for the submission of names of the candidate as specified by the Electoral Act. Dickson’s four babies The Wife of the Bayelsa Governor, Mrs Rachael Dickson, on Friday gave birth to four babies, a boy and three girls, after 15 years of barrenness. A statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson in Yenagoa, said that Rachael put to bed in the United States of America. According to the statement, the mother and the newborns are doing well. The statement also expressed Governor Dickson’s gratitude to friends, family members and the people of Bayelsa for their prayers and support.
